Choosing Your Stationery

There are a lot of factors to consider when deciding on your wedding stationery, budget, time constraints, style and content being the first you should deal with.

Your wedding invitation is the very first impression your guests will have of your big day so you want to get it right. It sets the tone for the whole day and, by getting your invitation right, your guests will have an idea of how formal your day will be as well as a hint or 2 of colours or themes - unless you want to throw them off the scent!

Often we assume that it will be cheaper to make our own stationery but this isn't always the case. When you buy from a professional company they will be buying in much larger quantities of card stock, envelopes etc so will be getting a better rate per card. Add to this the cost of printer inks, lining papers, double sided tape, any embellishments and, of course, the wasted ones until you get it just right, and you are already close to the cost of having your stationery made by a professional.

If you costed in your rate of pay for working several hours on designing, redesigning, then printing you would usually work out more expensive than having them made for you. We're not even going to mention the stress!

If you are still determined to have a go at it yourself then we at Two Little Words may have the perfect compromise... Let us print your main image, possibly even your inserts, then we will send you everything you need to construct the invitations yourself.

Once you have decided on who is going to make your wedding stationery you then need to choose a design. Think of your wedding day and how you imagine it to be. Bear in mind any colours or themes you would like to include and whether you want to have 'handmade' invitations, printed ones or some sort of mixture of the two. Do you want something formal or fun, simple or extravagant? Then start shopping around and looking at available designs. If you find two suppliers with similar designs then ask for a sample of both - often you will find a difference in quality that you can't always judge on price.

If you can't find what you are looking for, or don't even know what you want yet, then drop an email to a few designers and see what they can come up with that's within your budget - sometimes you will just click with a designer and they will have the idea you've been searching for - the good ones are never too busy to chat for a while and design exactly what you want.

You also should remember that you might be choosing an entire range of wedding stationery and not just an invitation. Will the design you had in mind make nice menu's, place cards or table plan and does your chosen stationer make all of the items you want?

We can't emphasize enough how important it is to be able to communicate properly with whoever is making your wedding stationery, especially if you are having a bespoke design.
